Warming up / Ice-breakers

1. Continuing Story

group size: 15 – 20 participants
time: ca. 30 minutes
material: none
needed space: enough space for a circle
objective: warming up
short instruction: All participants create a story together

Description: Someone in the group says one word and creates one sentence with it. With the last letter of the word the next participant chooses another word and creates a new sentence. The story should then be continued by each person in the group, one aft er the other.
A theme may be chosen for the exercise.

2. One-two-three or Clap Snap Jump

group size: even number of participants
time: ca. 10 – 15 minutes
material: none
needed space: a quiet space
objective: breaking up, focussing on concentration and cognition
short instruction: The participants have to concentrate and count in pairs from 1 to 3. Later the numbers are changed in two actions.

Description: The group members must stand in pairs. Each pair counts one aft er another, 1; 2; 3 (the first one says “one”, second one says “two”, then the first one says: “three” and the second one: “one”…). When the pairs get used to counting like this the number “one”
changes to clap. Later number “two” changes to snap. In the end number “three” changes to jump. Finally the round goes like this: The first one “claps” (1), the second one “snaps“(2) and the first one: “jumps” (3), the second one “claps” (1). This can be continued as long as everyone wants.

3. Shaman

group size: at least 5 per group
time: ca. 10 minutes
material: one ball (e.g. tennis ball), one coin
needed space: 2 lines with chairs back-to-back (the 2 lines of chairs “look” in the opposite direction). At both ends of each line there has to be one chair looking to the leader or the ball
objective: breaking up, encourage concentration and cognition
short instruction: Playing a game silently while cooperating with the whole group, concentrating on signals which are passed on.

Descripti on: The group is divided into two groups. The participants sit in a line, each participant back to back to the other group. They can sit on chairs or on the ground. All participants from one group hold hands. At one end lies a ball and at the other end stands the leader with a coin. The two first participants at the end with the coin may look at the leader, the two participants at the other end look at the ball. The leader throws the coin. If you can see the head of the coin the participants who look at the coin have to give a signal to their group. The signal is squeezing the hands of your neighbor. If the last participant got the signal, he/she can pick up the ball in front of him/her and passes it on to his/her group. The fastest group wins this round and all participants go to the next chair, so everyone has a new seat. If the coin is thrown to the number nothing happens. The group who is first sitting in the same order as at the start (that means who changed chairs for one whole round) is the winner. If there is any mistake (like giving a signal when the coin is thrown to the number), this group has to change position in the opposite direction.

4. Fruit Salad

group size: at least 15 participants
time: ca. 15 minutes
material: chairs
needed space: enough space for a circle with chairs
objective: breaking up, dividing the big group into small groups
short instruction: The participants have to change seats quickly when their fruit is called.

Description: The participants sit in a chair circle, one participant (at the beginning the leader) stands in the middle of the circle. Every participant gets one fruit; there should be about four to eight participants to each fruit name. The participant in the middle of the circle
names a fruit, e.g. apple. All of the participants with the fruit apple have to stand up and find a new seat. The participant in the circle tries to get one of the free seats.
So there will be a new person in the middle. This new person calls a fruit again and again these participants have to change seats. The person in the middle can say fruit salad again, and then all participants have to get up and find new seats or name two or more fruits, so that everyone whose fruit was named has to change seats.
Variation: Instead of fruits you also can choose similarities. E.g. “All participants who have one sister change seats.”
